TCFST started out as a semiconductor research laboratory. Following its success in semiconductor processing technology, TCFST expanded its scope of research and development into other fields through active cooperation with professors from universities in Taiwan . There were five laboratories owned by TCFST before 1988. They are now under the management of Technology Research and Development Department which oversees the operation of Semiconductor & Optoelectronics, Industrial Materials & Environmental Analysis, Nanotechnology Laboratories and the Project Office. Currently, the main focuses are:
- Collaborating with professors from NationalTsingHuaUniversity and other academic institutions and industrial organizations across the country in sharing and expanding the functions of the existing laboratories.
- Promoting advanced technologies such as biotechnology and nanotechnology.
- Providing professional services in the areas of Intellectual Property Rights, Technology Transfer and Technology Management and driving the industrial transformation and the modernization of industrial and business management.
